AWM Caption: MALAYA, BAKRI, 1942-01-18. A JAPANESE TANK BURNING AFTER BEING HIT BY GUNFIRE FROM 13TH BATTERY, 4TH AUSTRALIAN ANTI-TANK REGIMENT. A SECOND TANK HIDDEN BY THE FIRST WAS ALSO DESTROYED (SEE 011306). A CAPSIZED MARMON-HERRINGTON ARMOURED CAR AND TWO DESTROYED VEHICLES OF THE 45TH INDIAN BRIGADE LIE BESIDE THE ROAD.
During WWII, 175 Marmon Herrington Mk III reached Malaya Command prior to the Japanese invasion. This photograph is reported differently by different sources; it is either from a roadblock by the 4th Australian Anti-Tank Brigade, or the 45th Indian Brigade.
1. From left to right—or near to far—on the road appear the capsized British armored car, the remnants of the two trucks belonging to 45th Indian Brigade, and the still-burning Type 95 Ha-Go light tank. Unseen, behind the first enemy light tank is a second, also alight.
2. On the overturned armored car, the left-side perforated metal unditching strip, or sand recovery ramp, extending between the rear and front wheels, has been displaced when the vehicle flipped over. Such location clearly identifies this armored car as the Mark III, because on the Mark II, the unditching apparatus was stowed over each rear wheel well.
